Granny Square Tutorial Time!

Several blogs that I read and several comments I have gotten about crochet mention frustration with the Granny Square in general.  I decided to take some close-up pictures as I crocheted one of the squares for my Larger Than Life tote bag so that I could feature a few of the things that I personally do to make a nice looking Granny Square.

Obviously I'm not going to give away the pattern here - the pattern is in the Spring Issue of Interweave Crochet.  But I do have some general Granny Square construction tips that you might find helpful.  This is good for general crochet help and also with doily making.  My first crochet experience was with making thread crochet doilies which are often just a slightly more complex way to arrange the basic Granny Square - oh yes, and with thread.  :)

The Willow block, which the LTL bag designer Cecily Keim used, can be found in the book 200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton (Interweave Press)

The Willow block has seven rounds and uses three colors.  This tutorial is organized with photos from each round and starts with the basic slip knot.  The information in this tutorial is not the ONLY way to execute these steps or stitches, simply the way that I do them.  My own methods are influenced greatly by tutorials and instructional guides that I read and I'm always open to trying a new technique so these may not always be my preferences.

eta:  As Paul noted, I am left handed!  I hope this doesn't mess anybody up!  The concepts and finished product are still the same.

THE SLIP KNOT

When making a doily or granny square I like to make a central slip knot so that the stitches can be worked in the space comfortably then the tail can be pulled to cinch the stitches together as closely as you like.  With a granny square I like mine to be very tight.  The pattern instructs you to make a ring of four stitches then double crochet "X" number of times into that ring.  Sometimes it gets really difficult to get all those stitches into that ring which is why I like to crochet my first round of stitches into a slip knot loop.  These photos show how that knot is created.  You want a loop that is tightened when you pull the TAIL - not when you pull the WORKING YARN.

S1 S2

S3:  with your crochet hook, pick up the piece that is crossing through the bottom center of the loop.

S3 S4

ROUND 1

1a:  enlarge the slip knot so that when you are ready to do ch3 as your first dc, you pull the first chain stitch through the slip knot loop you have made.  keep the slip knot loop big enough to continue stitching but don't let the tail pull through.

1a_2 1b 1c

1d:  make all your dc stitches into the slip knot loop
1e:  pull the tail to close the loop.  this doesn't HAVE to be super tight!  there is still a gap between the last dc and your ch3 which represents the first dc.
1f:  slip stitch through the top of your ch3 (1st dc) to close the gap.  this is the end of round 1.

1d 1e 1f

ROUND 2

2c:  shows the second round completed.  time to cut off the first yarn color!

2a 2b 2c

ROUND 3

Add your 2nd color at this point - round 3 is very similar to round 2.  If you've gotten this far you shouldn't need guidance with round 3.  Joining the new color can be done in many ways.  When I made this tote I didn't crochet over any of the yarn tails as I joined new colors so there was a lot of weaving in of the ends when I was finished with the squares!  If you want to avoid this you can crochet over the ends as you go and I'm sure there are good tutorials on the internet showing how to do this.  I've gotta look for one when I'm ready to start another bag!  :)

ROUND 4

4a:  at the end of round 3 you close the round by doing a slip stitch into the top of the ch3 (1st dc).  to move up to round 4, ch1 then sc into the space where you did your slip stitch.  this creates something to join to when you're ready to close round 4.
4b:  in round 4 you are starting to form the corners of your block with ch5 spaces.  when you do a slst into the 5th ch from your hook it will look a little funny.  so does mine.  but that's just the way it is.  don't be alarmed when this sl st spreads out during the next round.  it's the nature of crochet and if someone can give me a hint about how to avoid this, let me know!  I've looked very closely at the pattern photos in the magazine and it appears that the same thing happened on their squares in that spot.
4c:  round 4 is complete.  close with a slst in that space I mentioned and do another loose slst to hop over to the first ch5 space.

4a 4b 4c

ROUND 5

5a:  shows round 5 complete.  you know the stitches and the routine by now.  time to cut color 2!

5a

ROUND 6

Round 6 is the foundation for round 7.  It goes very quickly but is very important!  I kept wanting to skip round 6 and would start right in with round 7, then say Umm.... there's something wrong here!  :)

6a:  shows finished round 6.
6b:  closeup of round 6 corner.

6a 6b

ROUND 7

7a:  closeup of round 7 corner.
7b:  completed round 7 - completed square!  when the square is first finished it's a wrinkled little mess.  tug at the corners and pull the sides into shape - it really is a square!

If there are any steps I might have missed or you need clarified, please let me know in the comments.  I know that the Larger Than Life bag designer Cecily Keim will LOVE to get your questions and comments!  Be sure to check out the Larger Than Life Crochet-Along blog!  :)

Weight Loss Challenge - Week 4

Good Rainy Monday Morning Everyone!!  I have a LOT to talk about here.

First - I'm not even going to take the time for my little weight loss chart today.  I weighed 209.5 this morning which is a success compared to where I was a few days ago.  It's half a pound heavier than last Monday but I'm okay with that for now.  My mid-week reality check slapped me into shape and I have been doing better about sticking to the meal plan at www.diabetescontrolforlife.com and also drinking at least 64oz of water per day.  I also haven't been drinking coffee for several days and that seems to help too.  I had one cup last night but other than that - nada.

Still not the most important thing of the day - I've made good progress on the Larger Than Life Tote and have pictures.  Do you love this fabric or WHAT?  I should be finished with the body of the bag this evening and will make the lining maybe tomorrow?  Depends on what else I have going on - not sure yet.  Here it is in pictures so far:

Dsc00566

The fabric I chose is from Hancock Fabrics in their Quilting Shades collection - I think that's what it was called.  This is the "Rust" color but they also had brown and burgundy.  They all three looked great with these yarn colors so it was a hard choice!  Don't forget to prewash your lining fabric when you make this tote!  OH, and I picked two different zipper colors - one is Barberry and the other is Deep Purple!  I was really into the idea of using a contrasting zipper color when I read the caption on the designer's flickr set stating that she used a great BLUE zipper in the original bag.  Isn't that awesome!?  It really goes with the feeling of the color variations and having it be a jumble of contrasting yet complimentary colors.  I'm loving this pattern in every possible way!

I've taken a few pictures to do a little tutorial on hints and tips when making granny squares, which I think will be really helpful to anyone who is just learning to follow patterns, etc.  I know I'm constantly learning new things as I knit and do other types of needlework (though knitting is still my main squeeze!) so maybe there will be a helpful tips for those who already know how to crochet as well.  Watch for the tutorial in the next few days.

NOW for the most important part of this post.

Everyone on the planet seems to know about the tornado that destroyed Greensburg, Kansas on Friday night (local news coverage here).  It was a town of 1400 people.  Every church building was destroyed.  Every business on main street was demolished.  Every house was left shattered shredded and splintered.  I know that despite their hopeful outlook at the moment, many of the people and families will eventually feel shattered shredded and splintered because the road to recovery from a total loss like that is long and difficult.

Sunday morning our pastor told us that they had a signup sheet ready for volunteers and by the end of the day the signup sheet was full and there was a plan in place to select a family to help clean up their property then rebuild their home from the ground up.  We will know in about a week what family we are adopting and what their specific needs are - whether they have children, etc.

I can't go to Greensburg and help them clean up or build a house.  But I can do something that many knitters have done - I'm going to knit squares and assemble an afghan for the family.  I hope that you will help.

REBUILDING GREENSBURG - BLOCK BY BLOCK
What:  8" garter stitch squares knit from corner to corner on the bias
Fiber:  Wool or Superwash Wool - Worsted Weight
Color:  Any color - solid or variegated yarn

Greensburgbutton
(please save image to your own computer, etc etc etc)

If you are interested in helping with this effort please email me for the address to send squares.  Ladies at church have expressed an interest in helping.  The finished afghan will be approximately 64" square (8 blocks long; 8 blocks wide).  If we collect more than we need for our adopted family there are plenty of families who would love to receive a hand knit afghan.

I will be asking if the ladies at church are also interested in collecting quilt squares.  There are quite a few quilters among them and I know there are also quilters among my knitting friends as well.  I was thinking of 12" blocks with a flower basket theme - you pick whatever pattern you like.  Let me know if anyone is interested in this idea.

Have a wonderful week and even if you can't help out with afghan squares please keep the Greensburg, Kansas families in your thoughts and prayers.

Saturday Sky

Good Saturday Morning To You All!

Dsc00564

Last night our Kansas sky produced a monster storm west of us in the middle of the state which spawned many tornados and extensive damage to the rural towns and farms across that area.  Keep them in your thoughts and prayers for healing and recovery from the devistating storms and damage.  Eight years ago this past week I lived in a tiny house in Wichita on a day when there were tornados in Oklahoma and Kansas.  One tornado that went through Wichita that day flattened houses one block away from me and had me hiding in a closet scared to death.  Just listening to the non-stop storm coverage on the television last night brought a lot of that panic back to me.  I'm thinking of those families.

Did you notice our other little family in the picture above??

Dsc00565 Dsc00566

These precious little babies were snoozing away as I held the camera up to the basket taking pictures.  Thank goodness their mama trusts us!!  Throughout the day we'll hear these babies in a rousing chorus of chirping.  When I look out the window there is the mama feeding them and their little heads are bobbing up and down with mouths wide open.

I think last Saturday I said they were Purple Martins.  They're really Purple Finches!  Sorry about that.  Isn't it amazing how much they've grown in just one week?  Awww.  :)

One clarification on the CONTEST:  One comment per person per POST is eligible for the random drawing.  I did say per DAY, and I do mean that, but it's actually per POST because I'm posting every day until the contest ends on Friday.  Does that help?

Hopefully I'll have time to pick up some lining fabric and zipper for the Larger Than Life Tote while I'm in Wichita later today.  Yay!  I can't wait to get this put together.  I wound the body yarn into a ball last night and will hopefully get the sides sewn and body made today.  I thought maybe I would wash and block the sides before attaching the body but I need to read through the instructions again before I make a final decision about that.  The yarn color for the body is a dark brownish red.  If I had to give it a name I would say it looks like a Brown Sheep Co. color called Oxblood.

Have a great weekend!

OH!!!  HOW COULD I???  hehehe

Eye Candy Friday and A Contest!

Happy Friday Everyone!!!  It's a very good day.  :)

Dsc00569_2

Today is Friday, May 4th.  You can now officially put your winter coats away.  When I was a little girl growing up in Michigan my best friend was Patty Cena.  Today is Patty's birthday!  Yay!  If I'm not mistaken, dear Patty is 40 years old today!  The last I knew - about seven years ago when we had our 15yr class reunion - Patty was a math instructor at Michigan State University.  If anybody out there knows Patty, please tell her Happy Birthday from Laura!  :)

Patty's mother always told Patty that she had to wear her winter coat until her birthday.  Yes there were plenty of times that Patty had to carry that coat because it was WAY too warm to wear it.  But it's the mark I have still used to this day - even though I left Michigan for warmer climes twenty-two years ago - I have always remembered Patty's birthday and her mother's house rule that her children took their winter coats to school until May 4th.  Or wait... was it the 5th?  Maybe it was the 5th.  Don't tell Patty Happy Birthday until tomorrow, okay?  Ohh, today is Carrie Trosper's birthday!!  CARRIE is 40 today!  Happy Birthday out there Carrie, where ever you are!  (how could I forget... maid of honor at my wedding... bff in high school - but her parents didn't have the coat rule)  Surely these girls don't mind me using their maiden names, right?  I know they are using different last names now.

Before I get to the real meat of this post, let's talk about my diet.  I've done badly this week y'all.  I've gained 3 pounds since Monday.  We won't do the math - it's bad.  So I'm taking my own advice and regrouping.  I have identified what I was doing wrong and I'm taking control again today.  Yes it's the middle of the week, and no I don't have to confess my dieting sins to y'all but I'm doing it anyway.  My trouble spots have been these:

    • I was not following my menu.  Yeah, the one I couldn't wait to get.
    • I was not drinking 64oz of water per day.
    • I was not getting to bed by or before midnight, thus not getting enough sleep.

Today is a new day.  I'll let you know how it's going on Monday.

Dsc00563
Poor photo compliments of a very overcast day, but you get the idea.

THE REAL MEAT!!  Yay!  I've made six more squares for the Larger Than Life Tote!  Please ignore the elephant in the corner - I'm neglecting my knitting and the guilt is looming large.  But I'm making squares.  Making squares.  Making squares!  I'm teaching a lace knitting class tonight and YES, I have one student.  Every great adventure begins somewhere and this one begins with probably just one student.  I have to finish putting my class materials together today so there probably won't be any knitting or crochet until I get back tonight at 9pm or so.

Dsc00564 Dsc00565

The Larger Than Life craze has struck EVERYWHERE!  The pattern designer, Cecily Keim, has created a Larger Than Life Crochet-Along blog and I wrote her this morning to join up.  I also asked her a few questions.  I'm making sure there aren't any legal issues with making a kit of yarn for the tote.  I thought about selling yarn kits and including the fabric and zipper and notions needed to complete the tote but before I go to the selling point.... I'm giving away a kit.  With the lining already sewn by me.  The yarn will mostly match the bag I'm making right now and will have a matching lining to this bag.  I'll probably pick up the fabric this weekend.  SO... I should just come right out and say it....

I'M HAVING A CONTEST!!

I'm rapidly approaching the blogging milestone of 3000 comments!!  But I don't want to give away too many hints about when that will happen!!  SO - Starting today - Every person who leaves a comment will be entered into a prize drawing!  The contest lasts until next Friday morning, May 11.  When I get up and print names of the commenters, the contest is officially over and we'll have a fun little name drawing session from the silver mixing bowl with the babies!

There will be at least two prize winners.  Maybe more if I feel very industrious.

  • The person who leaves comment #3000 will get a Larger Than Life Tote yarn kit with a zippered lining premade by me!  eta: The kit will include all the yarn needed for the bag, crochet hook, zippered lining made by me and a copy of the Interweave Crochet magazine this pattern is in.
  • At least one other prize will be awarded to a commenter selected through the "Emeline pulls a slip of paper from the silver mixing bowl" drawing method.
  • I guess it's only fair to offer two drawing prizes so that Lila Pearl can pull a slip of paper from the silver mixing bowl too because if she doesn't get to do something Emeline is doing I'll have a big problem on my hands.

The only rules are that you can comment as often as you like - you don't know how far we are from 3000!  But each person is only eligible for one name drawing per DAY.  That makes seven chances between now and next Friday.

Photos later in the week of what the other prizes are!  YAY!

The center of these blocks makes me think of the SUN!  We haven't seen much sun at all in SEVERAL days, so this has been a nice thing to think about as I make squares.

Dsc00570

Everybody have a wonderful weekend!  We're headed to the Y this morning.  :)
